As I sit here at a JJ Bean, I can't help but feel the energy of the anxious people surrounding me, drinking coffee and eating sweets. Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we fill out precious bodies with stuff that does us no good? Have we been brainwashed? Do we hate our bodies? Do we know any better?
All I know is when I eat shit, I feel like shit. Eating clean makes me feel vibrant and alive, improving my mental health. Yet, I still find myself, at times, eating shit. I somehow convince myself that I 'deserve' it... sorry what? Do I deserve to feel like shit? Ha! That's an interesting one. Yet, I bet you've used that reasoning before, too.
I have struggled, and still do, with mental health. I come from a long line of depression in my family, and as I've become wiser and more experienced with this illness, I have noticed that what I put in my body plays a HUGE role in my mental health. We are all on this planet to learn from each other, and I'd like to share what has helped me.
I, for one, like to have fun, so these three tips include alcohol and some cheeky treats.
1. When I want to drink alcohol...
I drink from the plant of Agave. Agave alcohol, often referred to as tequila or mezcal, is considered one of the cleaner alcoholic options for mental health due to its natural production process and lower congener content. Congeners are by-products of alcohol fermentation that can contribute to hangovers and worsen mental clarity. Tequila and Mezcal also start to metabolize the moment it hits your saliva, and when you drink them in moderation, the alcohol never hits your liver.
I pair this alcohol with NOTHING. That's right, straight up or on the rocks. Baby sips, and I drink lots of water while enjoying my alcohol. It has been one of the BEST habit changes I have implemented for my mental health and body (as there is no sugar).
2. What's in My Water...
We all know we need to drink water, but I like to add things to it. My three favorite add-ins are electrolytes, collagen, and greens.
I checked the sugar content of these supplements and tried to keep it under 5gr/serving, or better yet, none. I have also tried some great brands in Canada and Mexico.
Electrolytes help regulate the balance of fluids inside and outside cells, tissues, and blood. This is crucial for maintaining hydration levels and proper cellular function.
Collagen supports our bones, muscles, hair, skin, and digestion.
Greens are a no-brainer—antioxidants, Fibre, and nutrient-dense nourishment all in a little scoop.
3. When I go out to eat...
If I'm going out to eat, I ensure I eat a healthy, protein-packed meal a few hours beforehand so I don't arrive hungry, leading to mindless eating. That's not to say you can't indulge and order what you want, but if you have nourished yourself properly beforehand, you're less likely to overdo it.
Drink enough water before eating and take your time chewing to avoid overeating. If you choose a heavy and rich meal, simply split it in half and ask the server for a box so you can immediately take half to go for your lunch the next day. It's better for the body and the wallet!
If I'm going to a potluck, I always bring a healthy dish I know is safe to eat. This is an excellent trick, which I'm pretty sure I am known for. Haha. Jenny always brings veggies and hummus or a nutrient-dense salad. Oops, that's me.
I'm your girl if you need guidance, personal training, or life coaching. Book a consult, and let's get started! If not now, when?
